About this condition
Narcolepsy and Idiopathic Hypersomnia
Narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia are central disorders of hypersomnolence: conditions in which the brain cannot sustain normal wakefulness, so daytime sleepiness persists no matter how much sleep someone gets. They share a diagnostic pathway and are often studied together.
In narcolepsy, sleep and wake intrude on one another, producing sleep paralysis, vivid dreamlike images at sleep onset and, in type 1, cataplexy. In idiopathic hypersomnia, sleep is typically long and uninterrupted but never refreshing, and waking can be prolonged and difficult. Both are diagnosed with an overnight sleep study followed by a multiple sleep latency test.
