About this condition
Narcolepsy Type 2
Narcolepsy type 2 brings the same persistent, overwhelming daytime sleepiness as type 1, but without cataplexy. People fall asleep unintentionally during quiet activities, and short naps may feel refreshing at first. Broken nighttime sleep, sleep paralysis and vivid dreams at sleep onset can also occur.
Hypocretin levels are usually normal in type 2, and the underlying cause is not yet well understood. Diagnosis follows the same path as type 1: an overnight sleep study to rule out other explanations, followed the next day by a multiple sleep latency test that measures how quickly someone falls asleep and how quickly they enter REM sleep during scheduled naps.
