About this condition

Narcolepsy Type 1

Narcolepsy type 1 is a lifelong neurological disorder in which the brain cannot reliably hold the boundary between sleep and wakefulness. Its defining features are overwhelming daytime sleepiness and cataplexy — brief episodes of muscle weakness usually triggered by strong emotion such as laughter or surprise. Many people also have vivid dreamlike images as they fall asleep, sleep paralysis, and broken sleep at night.

It follows the loss of hypocretin-producing neurons in the hypothalamus, a small group of brain cells that keep wakefulness stable. Diagnosis is made in a sleep laboratory: an overnight sleep study followed the next day by a multiple sleep latency test, and sometimes by measuring hypocretin in spinal fluid. Symptoms usually begin in adolescence or early adulthood and are often mistaken for ordinary tiredness for years before they are recognized.
