About this condition
Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Excess Weight
Obstructive sleep apnea and excess body weight are closely linked. Extra soft tissue around the neck and airway makes collapse during sleep more likely, and the fragmented sleep and daytime fatigue that follow can in turn make weight harder to manage — a cycle that reinforces itself.
In obstructive sleep apnea the upper airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, briefly interrupting breathing; severity is measured during a sleep study by the apnea-hypopnea index, the average number of breathing events per hour. Because the two conditions are so intertwined, some studies examine them together rather than separately.
